Call of the Wild: Sentence Normalization

Once again the easiest trick we can pull off with word frequencies is to try and normalize the unique vocabulary of Call of the Wild into something somewhat more bland. The idea is simple: We take a sentence, look up every reasonable synonym for the words in that sentence and then choose whichever synonym is most common in our Google book’s provided list of modern word frequencies.

Original: And Buck was truly a red-eyed devil, as he drew himself together for the spring, hair bristling, mouth foaming, a mad glitter in his blood-shot eyes.

Processed: And Buck was really a red-eyed devil, as he forced himself together for the bound, hair bristling, mouth bubbling, a sick flash in his blood-shot eyes.

Original: Of this offence Buck was unwittingly guilty, and the first knowledge he had of his indiscretion was when Sol-leks whirled upon him and slashed his shoulder to the bone for three inches up and down.

Processed: Of this behavior Buck was inadvertently guilty, and the first knowledge he had of his folly was when Sol-leks spun upon him and cut his shoulder to the bone for three inches up and down.

Original: He was a killer, a thing that preyed, living on the things that lived, unaided, alone, by virtue of his own strength and prowess, surviving triumphantly in a hostile environment where only the strong survived.

Processed: He was a killer, a thing that fed, living on the things that lived, unaided, alone, by worth of his own power and prowess, going triumphantly in a hostile situation where but the strong can go.
